Coach's Corner

"Championship Attitude"

"You must believe in your ability to win in order to win!"

Coach Hales with the 2006-2007 Varsity

Ryan Hales is the Varsity Coach for Girls Basketball at SAHS. He comes to South after spending the seven years at East High. Coach Hales served as the Head JV Coach and Assistant Varsity Coach of the Girls Program during his tenure there. Also, during his time at East, the program 3-peated as Alaska AAAA State Champions.

He attended Kodiak High School where he excelled in both basketball and baseball. After playing basketball at Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon, Coach Hales decided to come back to Alaska.

Since he started coaching he has spent several Springs and Summers traveling and coaching with different AYBA Select Travel Teams with players who have gone on to play at Stanford, Arizona, The Air Force Academy, San Jose State, Rice University, as well as The University of Pennsylvania.

He now has his own travel team, Alaska Lady Hoops, that is associated with The Alaska Youth Basketball Association (AYBA). Alaska Lady Hoops is made up of players from South, East, Service, Homer, Valdez, Palmer, Colony, Ketchikan and Juneau-Douglas High Schools. Coach Hales believes that travel to the lower 48 is crucial in the development of players who wish to play at the next level.

In addition to outside travel, Coach Hales believes a great program comes from hard work, attention to basic skills and a "Championship Attitude". You must believe in your ability to win in order to win! Coach Hales and his wife, Tracy, along with their daughter, Jordan, make their home in Eagle River.
